Walcott ready for England role
by Joseph Caron Dawe, 18 November 2007
Theo Walcott has said he is prepared to step up to the plate for England if he is called upon by Steve McClaren to fill the void left by Michael Owen’s injury.
The Newcastle striker will miss The Three Lion’s final Group E Euro 2008 qualifier against Croatia after pulling a thigh muscle against Austria, and despite Walcott’s lack of experience at senior international level he feels ready to answer his country’s call.
“I don’t pick the team but hopefully I can follow Michael,” said Walcott in the Sunday Express.
“I’ll always work hard for my country. That’s all I can do and see where it takes me.
“I’m happy to play anywhere, but everyone sees me playing down the middle and if the chance comes for my country I’ll grab it.”
Walcott’s coach at Under-21 level, Stuart Pearce, believes the Arsenal youngster has the confidence and ability to deal with a game at the top level.
“”The more the season’s gone on the more confidence he’s got,” said Pearce.
“There was a bit of nervousness before, but the more 90 minutes he gets for us and Arsenal he’s got better and better and stronger and stronger.
“He’s a great prospect and an exciting player. He’s a defender’s nightmare and there is a bright future for him.”
