The 21-year-old Rossi failed to impose himself at Old Trafford in the three seasons he was at the club and was transferred to Villarreal in the summer on a five-year contract.
Sir Alex Ferguson was a reluctant seller of a player he rates so highly and inserted a buy-back option in the deal.
Pires is not surprised by this and expects the talented striker to return to Old Trafford in the future.
When asked about his thoughts on Manchester United’s option in Rossi’s contract, Pires told setantasports.com: "I expected it because I know their mentality and they want to keep the good players.
"They can´t fail to miss such a good player so I have no doubts he will return there.
"He is a very good young striker who already has a great mentality. He is a goalscorer, you can see it every day at training.
“He is obsessed by scoring. He is tomorrow’s great attacker and I enjoy playing with him because I don´t know if he is going to stay at Villarreal.”
The Arsenal legend was then asked why Rossi did not impose himself at Old Trafford.
"It is Manchester United, competition is tough there," he said. "They don`t offer you gifts.
“I think he has learnt a lot up there. He has experienced what the top level is.
"Today he is taking advantage of it and we are very happy to have him here. He scores goals; hopefully he will continue until the end of the season.”
