Latics confirm serious Edman blow

Wigan Athletic have confirmed that their worst fears have been realised and that Erik Edman has sustained a ruptured knee ligament that is likely to keep him out of action for six months.

The Sweden international was stretchered off during the club’s defeat to Blackburn at the weekend after falling awkwardly on his left leg following a collision with Jason Roberts.

The Latics have now revealed the severity of the injury and that having ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament, Edman will undergo surgery in Sweden and then recuperate in his home country.

The news is particularly galling given that the former Tottenham man had made a positive impression in the five games he played for the club after joining from Rennes in the January transfer window.

Haivng lost his first-choice left back for the club’s relegation run-in, Bruce’s thoughts are with Edman as he begins what will no doubt be a long and tortuous road back to fitness.

“It’s a real shame because Erik has looked so natural and we will certainly miss him,” Bruce told the club’s official website.

“He’s also a lovely lad and a terrific professional, but he’ll get over this and be back for us, I’m sure. Everyone at the club wishes him all the best.”

The news also means that Edman will miss the Euro 2008 finals for his country.

Setanta readers' comment of the day

“Quote: 'History recognises the winners, so if you take someone who won the Champions League 20 years ago and ask them who their opponent was, they don't remember." ' Really? Anyone remember with affection the German side that won the World Cup in 1974? They had one gifted player - Beckenbaur (spelling?) the rest were just a good team playing well for each other. The Germans are like Chelsea, they bludgeon their way to finals and trophies but no-one remembers the attractive footbal because there isn't any. Anyone remember the Dutch team that won nothing that year? Cruyff et.al. They were the stars of the tournament with their total football, they are the team that people remember because of the football they played. They are the team that people hold with affection because watching football played with artistry is pleasing and lifts the spirit. Arsenal are more like Brazil. They play attractive football, but don't win everything. Sometimes they do. Arsenal will win again.”
