Kirkland back for Pompey
by Ben Blackmore, 26 March 2008
Wigan expect Chris Kirkland to return to action as soon as this weekend’s Premier League clash with Portsmouth.
Kirkland was forced to pull out of the England squad with a back injury, after he fell awkwardly during The Latics’ 3-1 league defeat to Blackburn.
England doctors agreed to excuse the shot-stopper on the say-so of the Wigan medical team, but now he is expected to return for Saturday’s trip to Fratton Park.
"Thankfully common-sense prevailed and Chris didn't have to travel to London to be assessed by the England doctors," revealed Bruce.
"The journey wouldn't have been ideal for someone with a bad back, but we do expect him to be okay by the weekend, although his back was still a bit in spasm yesterday."
Three players who will miss out at the weekend are Michael Brown, Wilson Palacios and Jason Koumas, who are all suspended for the game with Pompey.
"Having three central midfielders out at a crucial stage isn't ideal, but I hope we have enough strength in depth to deal with it," added Bruce.
