Butcher warns McGhee

Former Motherwell boss and Rangers defender Terry Butcher is urging Mark McGhee to stop reminding his players of their biggest problem as he believes it is having an adverse affect on the team.

McGhee has stated on more than one occasion this year that his side’s problem is that they lose too many goals from set pieces, and again it came back to haunt his side at Ibrox during Wednesday night’s defeat to Rangers.

“The only thing I would say about Mark is that he does keep on about set pieces, we lose goals at set pieces,” Butcher told Setanta Sports. “It is probably a fixation in his players’ heads now that they are going to lose a goal from a set piece.

“They have to work hard on that on Saturday because Aberdeen have got good height and delivery as well.”

However, a win for Motherwell would put the Uefa Cup place within the grasp of The Steelmen as their rivals, Hibernian and Dundee United, face the Old Firm at the weekend and Butcher believes McGhee is right to assume victory over The Dons will push them over the finishing line.

Butcher said: “Hibs go to Celtic on Sunday and then its Hibs against Motherwell on the final day, but three points would take Motherwell well ahead of Hibs and not virtually home and dry but almost there, I would say.

“He [McGhee] sees that as his big game and the only thing I would say is that Aberdeen have had two wins on the trot and they’re not dark horses, but they have come with a bit of a late run.

“They’ll still fancy coming to Motherwell and upsetting the odds there, but it is a big game for them and it’s about results and getting those three points, and they won’t mind how they get them.”

Setanta readers' comment of the day

“United deserved the title. why can't everyone see that? Why are there all the recriminations from TV and people on here? It was a clear penalty and the rio incident one wasn't. Yes, scholes could've been sent off but how many times do you see the ref show leniency in such situations? Chelsea couldn't even win anyway so any argument is completely moot.”
