Kingson wastes no more space at Blues
by Tom Adams, 15 May 2008
Just days after being publicly condemned as a ‘waste of space’ by Birmingham co-owner David Sullivan, goalkeeper Richard Kingson has been released by the relegated club by mutual consent.
The Ghanaian international, along with Franck Queudrue, bore the brunt of an outspoken attack from Sullivan on Monday as he criticised the quality of purchases made by former manager Steve Bruce following the club’s demotion to The Championship.
Club and player have wasted little time in parting ways and the remaining year of Kingson’s contract has been cancelled by mutual consent as Blues begin to prepare for life in The Championship.
After moving to the Midlands from Ankaraspor last summer, Kingson appeared just once in The Premier League and twice in the Carling Cup as he gradually became accustomed to being the third-choice goalkeeper at the club.
Manager Alex McLeish confirmed Kingson’s departure on Thursday and voiced his sympathy for the 29-year-old.
“I’m sorry things didn’t work out for Richard,” McLeish told the club’s official website.
“It’s about opinions and we have other plans so for the sake of his first team future, we have let Richard move on.”
