Ronaldo scoops Euro award

Ronaldo: Winner

Cristiano Ronaldo, as expected, has won the Uefa Club Footballer of the Year award at the draw ceremony in Monaco.

The Manchester United star scored in the Champions League final against Chelsea and had to beat off competition from three Blues stars to lift the prize.

Ronaldo picked up the gong for best forward from Portugal legend Eusebio and thanked his team-mates for their support.

Sir Bobby Charlton handed Frank Lampard the midfielder's trophy and Petr Cech picked up the top goalkeeper accolade from Peter Schmeichel.

There was a surprise in the defensive category with John Terry coming out on top despite missing the crucial spot-kick in Moscow that would have won the trophy for Chelsea for the first time in their history.

Terry saw off fierce competition from Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand for the award, which was voted for by the top coaches in last year's tournament.

obinna - 11 September 2008 20:23: terry was not qualified to win the award cos he lost the last kick that supposed to give the bules the trophy. also from the awards given to the chelsea players, it shows that chelsea was better to win the trophy. well we the united fans are sorry that they lost it out of overconfidence. well lets see what will happen in premiership.....; Report this to a moderator

MOG - 29 August 2008 10:15: The awards prove that Chelsea were the better team overall in last years Champions league. Its not that Utd won the trophy . . . Chelsea lost it. Utd are way over rated and they are not half as good a team without Ronaldo as their sub standard performances in their opening two Premier League fixtures have suggested. “While all big teams (Chelsea, Man U, Liverpool) were busy protecting their best players, Arsenal was in forefront encouraging injury prone Walcott to participate in that useless freindly. Arsenal has a very thin squad and I remember Walcott said it but Wenger didn't take action to add some players. Arsenal players are not made of steel and Wenger should be prepared for such situation. We need Arsenal supporters on the board of Arsenal who can feel the way we feel when the team is losing and they can force Wenger to buy some experience players. Current board members are only interested in profits yet they (profits) don't go into history of the club”
